Backing up the VHS

History data can be backed up manually, through the use of replication, and by backing up journal files.

See also Value History Service Backup in the Backup and Restore section.

Manual Backups

Manual backup requires copying the data files to another location. The VHS must be stopped to perform this operation. The files to copy are:

The VHS Import Export Utility can be used for manual backup of the VHS.

Replication

Backing up history data can be made easier through the use of replication. A replicated VHS can be stopped and the data files listed above can be copied manually to a backup location. This prevents a disruption to the production VHS. Configure the change queue to be of adequate size to prevent rollover while the replicated service is stopped.

See VHS Replication for more information.

Journal Files

Journal files provide another method to produce a backup of history data. The VHS can be configured to automatically create daily journal files that contain all of the changes to the database for the day. Closed journal files can be backed up easily since files sizes are typically much smaller than the main VHS database files.

See VHS Journal Files for more information.

Backup Keywords in the .cfg File

All services have a set of backup keywords in the service configuration file to enable automatic backup for the selected service. For the VHS, these keywords enable the automatic backup of the VHS configuration file (Vhs.cfg) only; no other VHS data files will be backed up.

See VHS Configuration File Keywords for more information.
